Tour Plan
Day 1: Arrival
Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where you will meet a Balletto African Adventures representative and transfer to your hotel. The hotel provides cozy rooms, hot water, a swimming pool, Internet access, and courteous staff. In the evening, you will attend a briefing with the managers to prepare for the climb, review logistics, and discuss safety guidelines.
Day 2: Trekking from Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp
Your guide and climbing support crew will meet you at the hotel for introductions and a final gear check before driving to the Umbwe Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park, located at 1,800 meters above sea level. After completing permit and safety formalities, the trek begins through the rainforest with a steady climb to Umbwe Camp at 2,850 meters. The journey is long but gradual, allowing your body to adjust to higher altitude, and the mountain crew will have prepared camp and dinner upon arrival. Nighttime may bring altitude-related discomfort, so attention to hydration and rest is essential.
Day 3: Trekking from Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp
After an early breakfast, the trek resumes from Umbwe Camp through moorland terrain. Along the way, views of Meru Volcano may become visible if the weather is clear. By midday, you will reach Barranco Camp, located in a large volcanic fault. This moderate trek provides ample time for rest and acclimatization, helping the body adapt to higher elevations in preparation for the coming summit push.
Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Barranco Camp
This day is dedicated to rest and acclimatization at Barranco Camp, one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic camps. You will enjoy views of the dendrosenecio valley and the Barranco Wall, which you will tackle the following day. A light acclimatization hike to a higher point is offered, allowing your body to "climb high and sleep low," improving readiness for the upcoming ascent.
Day 5: Trekking from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
After breakfast, the group begins the climb up the Barranco Wall, a short but steep ascent that provides spectacular views of Kibo Volcano. The trek continues to Karanga Camp, featuring a series of ascents and descents along the route. Upon arrival, lunch is served, followed by an acclimatization hike towards Barafu Camp before descending back to Karanga Camp. This helps your body adapt to the increasing altitude while conserving energy for the summit climb.
Day 6: Trekking from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The group sets out after breakfast for Barafu Summit Camp at 4,673 meters, the base for the night summit to Uhuru Peak. Upon arrival, the mountain team has prepared tents and sleeping arrangements to allow relaxation and recovery. Later, an acclimatization hike to the intermediate Kosovo Summit Camp is undertaken before returning to Barafu Camp for dinner and rest, preparing for the nighttime summit attempt.
Day 7: Ascent to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp
The summit push begins at midnight from Barafu Camp. The trek ascends to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. Despite being technically manageable, the high altitude makes the climb physically demanding. Each pair of climbers is assigned a personal guide for monitoring and support. After reaching the summit, climbers may explore nearby glaciers before descending to Barafu Camp for rest, and then continue down to Millennium Camp for an overnight stay. The descent requires careful attention due to the higher risk of accidents.
Day 8: Descent from Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate
After breakfast, the final descent takes you through rainforest terrain to Mweka Gate, the exit of Kilimanjaro National Park at 1,640 meters. Upon arrival, climbers celebrate the accomplishment and receive certificates before being transferred back to the hotel. The journey concludes with a well-earned rest and optional late check-out depending on flight schedules.
